Sorry our comments were unhelpful. Maybe I should've asked you to rephrase your question.

Since no one else has left a comment I will. Think about what you are asking your equipment to do: pump HQ video and audio over an RDP connection that goes through a VPN connection over a residential ISP connection to your office ISP connection hosting your RDP server that then goes out the office ISP connection to the…

You haven't provided us with much information such as your firmware version. Are you running the latest firmware? If not you need to upgrade firmware, older versions had many issues. Have you enabled SSH management on the LAN interface?

Are you running the latest firmware? If not: you need to upgrade firmware. If you are: open a ticket with support.

"I don't relish the thought of moving 40+ remote users to Netextender" That might have to happen if your PSK gets into the wrong hands and your not already doing MFA with GVC (which you ARE doing right?)... What version of Windows? 10 and 11 can have issues with Windows Memory Protection messing about with the NetExtender driver. Considering it's not even your clients device, let their IT handle it.

No.

Have you read this KB?

Proper DNS would negate the need to use the HOSTS file. At least you figured it out.
